Who’s developing yours?
Building a successful SME takes ambition, resilience and good judgement. But sustaining and scaling growth demands something more: leadership development.
Scaling a business from 10 employees to 20, 50 or 100 requires a different set of leadership skills and behaviours from those that helped you win your first customers. New challenges may include building a high-performing leadership team, delegating effectively, managing greater organisational complexity, or scaling sales overseas.
Yet many SME founders continue to invest heavily in products, systems and people while neglecting their own development as leaders.
Over 25s – a leadership tipping point
At some point, every growing SME reaches a stage where the founder can no longer be involved in every decision. While the tipping point varies from business to business, many founders first feel it when the team approaches 25 people. At this stage, it’s hard to remember everyone’s name. Success becomes less about personal capability and more about the ability to lead through others.
Regardless of their head count, businesses eventually encounter a ceiling to their growth. Revenue can stall, communication becomes more complex, decision making slows, and managers become increasingly dependent on the founder for approval.
Leaders and those close to them often respond by investing in new technology, new people or new processes. And sometimes that’s the answer.
But sometimes the biggest obstacle is the leader’s own capacity to evolve. This is not a ceiling to growth; it’s a ceiling to leadership. Every growing business eventually becomes a leadership challenge.
The business may have grown but is your approach to leadership scaling fast enough?
Don’t get isolated. Get coached.
As your business grows in complexity and the team expands, fewer people challenge your thinking. The team will look to you for direction and your managers may hesitate to disagree with you. Family and friends rarely understand the pressures involved.
This can create a dangerous leadership vacuum, where assumptions go unchallenged and important decisions become increasingly isolated.
It’s at this stage that a leadership coach becomes a real asset. The greatest value of coaching is often not the advice. It’s having dedicated time and space to think, reflect and challenge your own assumptions before small issues become major problems.
A leadership coach helps you:
Lead through others – Move from being the person with all the answers to building a team that can solve problems independently.
Think strategically – Focus more time on future opportunities and less on daily firefighting.
Make better decisions – Approach commercial and people challenges with greater clarity and confidence.
Communicate with purpose – Help employees understand where the business is heading and their role in getting there.
Increase self-awareness – Recognise the behaviours and habits that support growth and those that restrict it.
Investing in the decision-maker
The best coaches don’t tell you what to do.
They ask difficult questions, challenge assumptions and hold up a mirror to your leadership. Sometimes you’ll need support. Sometimes you’ll need challenge. The right coach knows when to provide each. As your leadership journey evolves, you may benefit from different coaches at different stages. There is rarely a perfect fit for every challenge.
Most growing businesses invest regularly in marketing, systems, recruitment and staff development. Yet every significant investment decision ultimately depends on the judgement of the leadership team.
Improving the quality of those decisions can have a greater impact than any individual project, system or hire.
Leadership must scale too
Businesses rarely outgrow their markets. More often, they outgrow the leadership practices that helped create their early success.
As your company grows, your role, and that of your leadership team, must evolve with it.
Continue investing in your products, systems, and people. But don’t overlook the key people whose decisions influence them all.
Invest in the leadership that will take your business where you want it to go.
